There are places that became famous because music history was made there, such as Woodstock.
Then there are places where history quietly begins without anybody ever realizing it at the time.
Imagine a street where Frank Zappa is your neighbor. Where just a few houses away, Joni Mitchell is writing a new song, David Crosby and Graham Nash discover their unmistakable harmonies, and Linda Rondstat put together The Eagles as her back up band. A place where Jim Morrison, Cass Elliot, Jackson Brown, Don Henley don’t meet because someone planned it, they just happen to live on the same street.
The music didn’t sound alike. Crosby, Stills & Nash didn’t sound like The Doors. The Mamas and the Papas didn’t sound like Frank Zappa. Linda Rondstat didn’t sound like The Beach Boys, and Carol King didn’t sound like Eagles, yet they All lived near each other.
That was Laurel Canyon, LA from 1966-1976.
